Common signs, and the kind of work that usually fixes them.

Worth knowing

Repair or Replace? A Water Heater Usually Tells You.

The age of the unit, the condition of the tank and the part that failed decide whether a repair is worth making, and a straight answer to that question is the most useful thing a plumber can offer.

A Few Things Worth Checking First.

None of this is required. All of it helps whoever comes out, and some of it stops the damage while you wait.

How do I know if a plumbing problem is urgent?

Water that cannot be stopped, sewage coming up, no water at all, or a smell of gas: urgent. A drip, a slow drain or a running toilet: worth fixing soon, but not tonight. When in doubt, shut off the water to the fixture and ask.

What information helps when calling a plumber?

Where the problem is, when it started, what changed, whether the water is off, and the age of the fixture or heater involved. A photo of the problem and of any visible model label helps too.

Are chemical drain cleaners a bad idea?

Mostly. They rarely clear a real blockage, they can damage older pipe and fittings, and they make the drain hazardous for whoever opens it next. A plunger or a hand auger is a better first step, and a plumber’s cable after that.

How is a sewer problem diagnosed?

With a camera. It shows the inside of the line, marks the depth and location of any defect, and separates a blockage that can be cleared from a pipe that has to be repaired.

How long does a water heater last?

It varies with the type of heater, the water it heats and how well it has been maintained. The condition of the tank, and whether it leaks, says more than its age alone.

How can drains be kept clear?

Keep grease, coffee grounds and fibrous food out of the kitchen sink, use strainers in tubs and showers, and run hot water after heavy use. Clogs that keep returning despite that usually mean something in the line needs attention.
